چکیده

Laser marking of metals and plastics is one of the most widespread of all laser materials processing techniques used throughout the industrial sectors. One remaining challenge is the creation of scanner readable marks on highly reflective materials such as aluminium without the aid of a surface coating. In previous work the authors have presented a novel technique employing a high average power diode pumped solid-state Qswitched laser to locally change the surface roughness, creating high contrast regions between highly scattering laser roughened marks and the unmarked reflective substrate. In this paper the effect of surface modification is quantified and analysed for aluminium, and the techniques are transferred and adapted to other widespread industrial materials such as stainless and galvanized steel. In this way the authors demonstrate the applicability of this laser technique for a range of reflective metals. Applications such as traceability and security are discussed for high volume industrial sectors such as automotive manufacture.

Laser Engraving Gulf Pearl Shell - Aiding the Reconstruction of the Lyre of Ur

The Lyre of Ur was one of two bull’s-headed harp instruments that British archaeologist Sir Leonard Woolley recovered from a mass grave during his highly publicised excavations of Ur’s Royal Cemetery in the 1920s and 30s in Iraq. Recreated unplayable models of the Lyre are held in Pennsylvania, London and, until recently before it was vandalised, the Baghdad Museum. It is believed that the orig...

Lost in the Supermarket: Decoding Blurry Barcodes

Linear barcodes—the ubiquitous alternating black and white stripes whose relative widths encode information—are used in shipping, tracking, and identification and come in more than 250 varieties. The most familiar is probably the UPC barcode used in supermarkets; based on their grocery-shopping experience, most readers probably consider the reading of barcodes a trivial problem. Indeed, when I ...

Toward fluid, mobile and ubiquitous interaction with paper using recursive 2D barcodes

This paper describes a novel 2D barcode approach for interaction with paper at varying distances using camera-enabled handheld devices. Intended for use with large paper formats such as maps and posters, barcodes are presented in a grid, providing location and orientation data across the entire area of the paper. The barcodes are reflective in the near-infrared range, just outside the visible s...
